Perhaps because he had pretty much retired at that point in his
career (what age was he, 72 years old at the time) and this was a one
off effort to sing a role he had wanted to earlier in his active
career. By all accounts of those who were there, he sounded in good
voice at the dress rehearsal two days earlier and came down with some
vocal problems the day of the performance. I don't think that this
one incident falls into the category of "disaster" regarding moving
outside one's "fach."
