Hi, Listers
I think "Imagine" is the lyrical representation of "The Island" ( or something like that ), the book by Huxley, which is a New-Age-ish version of his previous "New World". The difference is that Huxley was against it while Lennon was for it:
Self-help psychology takes up the role played by religions ( "no heaven... no hell"), with people living for the moment ( "for today"), without ideals to fight for ("nothing to kill or die for" )- with propaganda, Prozac and its siblings to make sure people adapt to all situations with a big "Kumbaya smile" on their faces-, global government ( "no countries"), in a stately-owned economy ( "no possessions" ).
Part of the world has been there. That's a worldwide version of the USSR, China or Cuba. It's as fakely peaceful as the white dove, an intl symbol used to represent peace and now supported by the United Nations but that was originally created by Picasso at Stalin's request as icon to represent the "utopian" ideals of his regime. Looks ( and words ) can and do kill.
Best wishes,
Caio
