Jennifer, I have a couple of students with the same problem (could it be our water?). One exercise that has been successful in increasing their awareness of the activity in the velum is humming on /m/ (the velum is down), then continue the hum and change to /ba/ (the velum rises and seals off the velopharyngeal port for the /b/) so that we get something like /mmbaaaaaaa/. Another exercise is a scale using combinations of syllables made up of a voiced stop or fricative and a vowel (ba, di, go, tho, zu, ve etc.). Hope this helps, Craig Burnaby, BC
