After three days of thilling competition, the First Jeunesses
Musicales Montreal International Competition in Voice has now
conclude the semifinal round. 51 candidate performed over 9 sessions
to an enthusiastic audience. After a one hour deliberation tabulating
the results, the jury of six legendary singers (Teresa Berganza,
Grace Bumbry, Marilyn Horne, Joseph Rouleau, Cesare Siepi and Jon
Vickers) and one musicologist have chosen the following ten finalists:

Note that the finals will be available in video webcast from
Radio-Canada. Follow the competition at our special page
http://voicejm.scena.org. The quality of the candidates were
extremely high, much better than at last year's Cardiff Singer of the
World Competition heard over the internet last year. I myself counted
19 singers who could have passed onto the finals. Review of the first
day of semi-finals is already posted on our website. We will publish
a report of the last two days of the semifinals in the next 24 to 48
hours.
The competition is organizing a full day of masterclasses tomorrow
(June 2) at Pollack Hall at McGill University in Montreal:
- Grace Bumbry (10 a.m. - 1 p.m.),
- Marilyn Horne (2 p.m. - 5 p.m.),
- Teresa Berganza (7 p.m. - 10 a.m.)
LSM will be there to report on the masterclasses. For those in the
Montreal, there is also contest to win one of three pairs of tickets
to the closing Gala on june 7. Deadline to enter: June 5.
