I went to a "Care for the Voice" Seminar hosted by Loyola University Medical Center (where all the opera singers in Chicago go for treatment relating to the voice). One of the things that they talked about is the difficulties singers have with their vocal cords caused by acid reflux. Apparently, this is not an uncommon problem.
On the flip side, I had two similar meetings with an ENT who isn't known for treating singers & got the impression that he thought I was a hypochondriac (once because it felt like my throat was closing up & the other time at the tail end of what I think was an ear infection).
