Karen asked about the books by Stanislavsky about acting.

Karen, I highly recommend reading Stanislavsky's (also spelled Stanislavski)
books about acting. The man used a wide-ranging program of instruction and
application for his actors and singing-actors. Contrary to popular opinion
and practice, he neither had nor endorsed any "method" but was fascinated by
the myriad of skills and approaches that an actor uses to bring a piece of
literature to life. The books are essentially an overview of the
workshopping of various works, including art songs.

I read Stanislavsky's books when I was an undergraduate in college, and used
his ideas as a basis for my program of study, thanks to a liberal arts
college that thought the idea was terrific. It was the basis for my adding
movement classes, including fencing and ballet, to my performance studies,
and an emphasis in theatre to my degree. All great experiences which have
helped me tremendously as a performer.
