I know there's been a bit of a thread about smoking recently on the list, and I have a (sort-of-)related question.
I am a high school student who is by no means looking for a career as a professional musician. I participate actively in choirs/select choral groups at school and am sometimes called on to perform solos at concerts and such. I also happen to be the lead singer in a pop/rock cover band (which is basically just an excuse to do something after school; I'm not really looking for a career in that area either).
As an often-broke high school student, I choose to have a part-time job at a local bowling alley. Hence my problem - I am exposed to a heinous amount of second-hand cigarette smoke at work. Change of job isn't much of an option - other places aren't willing to work around my busy schedule. Besides, it isn't much of a job to begin with; I really only work on weekends from the middle of March through the middle of July.
Basically, ever since I started work for this year a few weeks ago, the cigarette smoke has been bothering me more than usual. I've been doing this job for, oh, about 7 or 8 years now and really don't remember having this much of a problem before. Since working last weekend, my throat has been dry and scratchy, and my voice has been going in and out (if that makes any sense). Obviously, as the week progresses and time passes out of the clutches of the second-hand smoke, it gets better, but then the weekend comes and the cycle begins anew.
I've been doing my best to avoid the smoke as much as I can: politely asking smokers who decide to stand right next to me and puff smoke in my face to move and whatnot. I'm wondering if there's anything else I can be doing to minimize the effects of the smoke, and/or to soothe my throat and get rid of the dry cough once the weekend is over. Any help would be greatly appreciated, :).
