Hi all,

In the April 2002 issue <
http://www.scena.org/lsm/content.asp?Vol=7&No=7&lan=2 >
of La Scena Musicale (http://en.scena.org),
we are featuring a number of articles on opera and vocal related subjects.

* On the cover: The bass-baritone Bryn Terfel will be in Montreal for
a benefit gala event for Opéra de Montreal on April 7th. A few
weeks ago, Terfel spoke to us by phone and in a candid conversation,
he discussed his early development, his career, his achievements, his
preparation techniques and his future plans. As you will discover,
Terfel is well spoken and unassuming. The text on the web is taken
from the print edition; the transcript of the remaining conversation
will be put up in a week. Visitors can also enter to win the prize of
5 Bryn Terfel CDs, courtesy of Universal.

* April 11, 1902 will go down in history as the day that changed the
gramophone. We celebrate the 100th anniversary of Caruso's first
recording with a look at the voice (the first of a series on the
great tenor). In a related article, we look at recording techniques
of the day. As a bonus, The Musical Table/La cena musicale showcases
Caruso's culinary talents as we feature the recipe "Spaghetti alla
Caruso".

* The Canadian Opera Company in Toronto will be presenting Handel's
Giulio Cesare in April with a star-studded cast including two
countertenors: Canadian Daniel Taylor and American Brian Asawa. It
may be the first time for two top countertenors to be featured a
Canadian stage. On this occasion, we asked Daniel Taylor to present a
short history of the countertenor, and to explain how the voice works
and his approach to technique.
Incidentally, as a fundraiser for La Scena Musicale, we are
organizing an opera weekend in Toronto on April 20-21 to see Giulio
Cesare and Boris Godunov. Visit

for more details.

* We also feature an article on Bach's St. Matthew Passion

Enjoy,

Wah Keung
