Dear Karen and list,
Karen,
I have the music for Medtner's 'Sonate-Vocalise', published by Wilhelm Zimmermann, Frankfurt am Main, no sign of an ISBN, but judging by the yellowing state of the pages this has been lying around on some warehouse shelf for some time.
I like it a lot - it doesn't go too high, a couple of brief A flats and quite a lot of Gs. The tessitura is highish in places, lurking up around the top of the stave, but it doesn't stay there too long, and anyway that suits my voice. I would love to perform it but so far haven't had the opportunity, although I have been slightly put off by the composer's instructions at the beginning, which say:-
'In performance, it is desirable to achieve the ease and lightness that characterise the tone of a reed-pipe - a quality of which trained singers often lack, but which so many untrained peasants possess.'
Speaking as a trained peasant, I'm not sure if the noise I make would comply with his wishes, but, if you decide you want to, I'm sure you could dust off your reed-pipe voice and go for it!
Regards,
Sheila
