Regardless of how one chooses to delete, not everyone has unlimited access. Some people have to pay for each email they download or by the kilobyte. So for these people, spam costs them money. Even for those for do have unlimited access, you are paying for the wasted bandwidth somewhere. Your ISP has to mantain servers and software and infrastructure. The price they charge you is certainly based partly on bandwidth. Spam wastes bandwidth and you end of paying for it in higher monthly access prices. It's like an advertiser sending you junk mail and making you pay the postage for it. It adds up after awhile.
