Here's a question for you Vocalisters: How do we feel about voice-related commercial postings to the list (i.e., an administrator advertising a summer program)? There's been a recent backstage brouhaha, so we thought we'd put it to the group to clarify the general "no advertising" policy.
I currently bounce an awful lot of spam from non-members, vocal and non-vocal (ranging from "HOT CHIX NOW" to "new rock band online, $5 a month"). Should there be a distinction between vocal ads and non-vocal spam, or should we ban it all, or just ban ads from non-established listmembers, or what?
This would not, of course, apply to non-commercial postings (recital announcements, etc.) or personal recommendations ("has anyone heard of this program?" "I did it last year and my experience was xyz"). And it would seem reasonable, in the latter example, if someone else brings it up, for an administrator to respond with a kind of "disclosing my affiliation as the X of this program, I'll answer any questions about it" post. It's the affiliated party bringing up the program to advertise it that's the question here. I have no opinion about it, just wanted to clarify what the group wants as an advertising/soliciting policy.
So I've put up a poll so you guys can vote on what the policy should be. If I could give a personal nudge, I'd caution against allowing "one post only from anyone," since the usual spamming technique is to join a group, send the spam, then leave the group -- drive-by spam, as it were. So unless you want to embrace ALL the semi-vocal spam that currently gets filtered out, don't choose that one.
