The problem is with opera in general. Opera is a very niche market with a
limited number of opportunities to make a living. Unfortunately some
excellent singers never get much of an opportunity because the demand is so
small for opera. In addition, these singers sing in such a way that they
can't get hired outside of opera so when it comes down to it they are never
heard at all. What a shame.

However, at some point it is up to the singer to determine if they really
have a shot in such a tough industry as opera or if they should retool the
way they sing so more possibilities are open to them. So when it comes down
to it, the fate of the singer is really in his/her hands.
