Hi John,

I always believed a 'vocalise' to be 2 things: a song or melody without
words, as well as a song or melody (with or without words) for the purpose
of training the voice. I know that the songs by e.g. Vaccai are also known
as 'vocalises', although they all have words. Something like 'etudes', I
guess.... With voice it's just that you have the choice to either use words
or not.

I do believe however, that word-vocalises are a must for the voice. I get
warmed-up by wordless vocalises, but the real training stars when the words
are there!

As for Rachmaninoff... well, it's just a guess, but he transformed a
wordless vocalise into a piece of art! (I love it!) It's definately NOT
something to warm up your voice with.... :-)

Bye,
Nande
