Subject:  G&S "lookism"

Hi all,
I have to apologize. I've been lurking here for months. Just don't seem to
have enough time to read all of the wonderful contributions you all send.

I did a lot of G&S about 20 years ago in Portland,OR with a very small
company of amateurs, most of us were as good as any professionals. I do have
to agree with the comment about the "pre-casting" of roles in these types of
situations. But here's one you won't expect. The company(the now-defunct
Studio Lyric Theatre of Portland...had to get a plug in) was without a Ko-Ko
for the Mikado and time was running short on rehearsals. I was asked somewhat
begrudgingly by the director(we had had a falling out) if I would consider
it...I said "Sure".
I was probably the largerst person on earth to ever have played that role(I'm
6'3" and was about 200 lbs). but I played it to several standing ovations,
I'm pleased to remember.
Moral: Screw the director. Give it your best shot and the audience will be
the judge.

I'm back to singing after a 15 year layoff tomorrow night. I'm doing a
private party for Valentine's Day. Things like" When I Fall In Love" and
"Till There Was You", etc. Wish me luck!
