Not necessarily always or even mostly on the portamento. Can also be notes interpolated between whole steps or thirds in a progression.
I strongly urge you to coach with a Baroque music specialist before attempting your own ornamentation unless you are well-immersed in Baroque musical style. Many opera singers not "grounded" in Baroque style tend to favour Bel Canto style ornamentation which is absolutely wrong for Handel, Purcell, etc
Good grief, once again I had no idea what I didn't know...my new music teacher chose that Handel aria for me, she said Baroque would be good for my voice type...(although I sort of think she is just really into anything from the film Farinelli since she even asked me about Porpora's Alto Giove which is not available at ALL) anyway....she sang Laschia for me and used ornamentation...I guess like an ass I assumed (as an ass would)that it was a simple matter. Tomorrow when I see her I will ask about baroque ornamentation as opposed to bel canto style and see what she says. If she tells me she has no idea what I am talking about I will hang myself. :)
