Hi Ian and list,
The dates I've got for Moreschi are 1858-1922 (New Oxford Companion to Music), and the recording I've heard of him singing 'Ave Maria' is dated 1902 or 1904, so he would indeed be in his forties if these dates are correct, although he does sound a lot older - does anyone know of any evidence to suggest that the castrato voice per se had a shorter shelf life, or was it just that Moreschi's voice doesn't seem to have lasted?
Regards to all,
Sheila
