So, we've broached the topic of "image" with opera singers.
Looking at popular artists (high record sales, public interest, that sort of thing) you see so many people like Ann Sophie Mutter, Joshua Bell, even Renee Fleming in her more recent CDs, looking more like super models than serious musicians. This seems to be what sells to a public which knows disappointingly little about good music....it's just a good thing that the 3 people I mentioned happen to have BOTH things going for them: looks and talent. (reminds me of Chorus Line -- I guess poor Montesserat would get Singing: Ten, Looks: Three)
So, let's say I'm interested in becoming a high profile artist. Should I spend lots of time and money on my image? I've already got a good start, thanks to our good Maker, so should I capitalize on that and try to break through with my looks? Or should I scorn that philosophy and strive solely to be the best singer possible? Would impresarios and directors look down upon me if I come across as a screen siren?
Just wanting to hear some opinions.... Lauren
