And there's one more thing to be considered: in order to justify doing
something that is considered by some as undesirable foreign influence, pop
musicians doing what American audiences call "world music" tend to fabricate
a "natural evolutionary line" which is only a rhetorical device to mask what
is exportable music made for exporting purposes only.

Carmen Miranda was maybe the first example of that. You can travel all
around Brazil and you'll never see a woman wearing a tropical fruit
headgear. If you do, that'll no doubt be a travesti who has Miranda as a
diva.
