Yup. Once you get out past a certain point, though, this "proximity
effect" is minimized. A foot or so is good enough, I think. You
actually are getting *too much* lower end when you get in closer than
that.

Many a cappella groups take advantage of this - the bass singer
will 'swallow' the mic in order to pump up his lower partials.
