I had the same experience in undergraduate school. It took about two
semesters of breaking down the bad habits (I had enormous amounts of
tension in my voice) before I was able to start producing a free
sound. Frustrating beyond belief at the time, but worth it in
retrospect.
A few of my students have had to go through a similar process as well.
The results are always worth the work.
