I have a HS student auditioning for Peabody in a few months -- he just started working with me in August. No musical background, no languages, but a world-class baritone voice and amazing sense of interpretation (acting major at the local HS of the Arts). He's nervous about the audition because of his lack of background, but as an alum, I've spoken with my teacher and with the opera director and they say that if he has the instrument I say he has, that's of paramount importance. Fingers crossed. I still have to bang German and Italian into this head over the next two months.
Your friend is singing Schoenberg with no musical background? WOW.
