Successful marking requires tremendous energy. The energy in the persona and in the production of the tone and language must be at a level similar to full voice singing. It is the physicality of the character and the rhythm of one's singing which gives conductors and other characters/singers the cues they expect and need. To mark successfully, vowels must be on the beat, consonants audible, and all physical elements of characterization present, whether singing at a lower dynamic level or interchanging octaves. Think of p not as piano but as powerful and you'll probably be fine.
