'obscure'). In art, the term 'chiaroscuro' is used to denote light and shade
in one color. In voices, it is a desirable mixing of high (bright) and low
(dark) overtones. You can hear this in Luciano Pavarotti, for instance, or
Edita Gruberova, to name a few.
