Harold,

I think you're probably being to hard on yourself!

If you're not accustomed to moving around while singing, it's going to take
some getting used to. We focus so much of our attention on singing (knowing
the words, the pitches, rhythm and dynamics, entrances, meanings, not to
mention characterization and interpretation) that it's a wonder that we have
any little grey cells left over for anything else.

Here's what I would do in your situation. See if you can get hold of the
director's blocking notes. Copy them and transfer the ones that apply to you
into your score.

Simulate the stage setup and walk through your blocking several times WITHOUT
singing, until you are beginning to understand where you have to be, what you
have to do, and when.

Next, play a recording of the opera and walk through the staging, again
without singing, until you have a feeling for timing your actions with the
music.

As you become more comfortable, speak or mark your part as you move.

Finally, put down the score (if you haven't already) and sing along as you
move.

I'll bet you'll start to feel more comfortable very soon. Good luck!

Judy
