laura,

i think that is an important distinction. what one feels and what IS
are not necessarily the same. i'd even concede that ms. eaglen probably
uses a greater percentage of her energy singing idolde than a marathon runner
uses but, ms. eaglen probably doesn't have all that much energy in the first
place. where the marathoner is like a race car with plenty of fuel, ms.
eaglen is like a rusty jalopie running on fumes and flat tires (this
comparison is intended only to illustrate the fuel difference and is not
intended as an insult to ms. eaglen).

the most stress i have ever experienced was being in an eight car
accident. i went spinning across five lanes of highway at 65 mph, into the
guard rail, backwards for about forty yards. that was over a year ago and i
still drive like an old lady in the slow lane. as traumatic as that was and
as stressed out as i was, it really didn't take that much energy. if
anything, i probably used up more energy afterwards making screwdrivers when
i got home (lots of wrist action).

i don't belittle the amount of emotion that one can go through during
a performance. it can be considerable. to compare it to the sports we
have been discussing, in use of actual energy (and, i mean that literally),
is a mistake. what about the ballet dancer who dances a major role? do
they not experience the same level of emotion as fellow artists? the
emotion being the same (hypothetically), would you really say that singing
uses as much physical energy as dancing ballet?
