Subject:  Italian books on tape?

Intelligent listfolk,

I've been trying with no luck whatsoever to track down
an importer/seller of Italian books on tape (not
language courses, but books read aloud in Italian). I
can't find squat.

Do they not exist? Does anyone know if the audiobook
phenomenon is solely an American one? I can't find
ANYONE who sells the darn things, or has even heard of
them.

There are zillions of language courses on tape/CD, but
nothing if you just want to listen to blocks of text.
I know that some lucky people get RAI television by
dish, but not I. Any other ideas about how to listen
to Italian being spoken while doing mundane things
around the house? (Anyone in conservatory taking an
Italian lecture class who could dictaphone-record the
lectures and sell them on the black market could make
a fortune in the singing world, I would think.)

hopelessly yours,

Isabelle B.
