Have you tried lip trills? (Also known by some as "bubbling.") I think you and your teacher may have a question of semantics as far as "head" and "chest" are concerned, much as we did on the List a few days ago.
Try lip trills, try whimpering like a puppy (and then opening from that into the "caw-caw" you mentioned, try sirens (I like an octave jump on "oooo--ee-oo", myself). I wish we could hear you to know what kind of a sound you're making...
