denis,
i have searched every chris cornell and a few soundgarden sites and find no mention of his working with david kyle. so, i'm curious to know when he worked with him and, of course, your source (sorry for the rhyme). i'm wondering if his toning down of the use of his extreme high range is the result of working with someone who has urged him to use a little caution or, if it the work was done early.
in comparing cornell's singing on the 'temple of the dog' cd to geoff tate's singing on 'eyes of a stranger' there is clearly a difference between their treatment of the higher range. tate's approach sounds somewhat cultivated where cornell's sounds pre-historic.
another thought here...clearly, there are some singers of this genre who would, in classical judgment, be considered baritones. it seems that these guys exhibit a lighter guage high range (except cornell) than the 'true tenors' like steve perry. i exclude cornell from the previous as it seems his singing is so primal.
