It hurts you because you're not trained as a "tenor". Without
training, it is difficult for men to sing past F4 without taxing
their voices also. With training, they learn to lighten their
production gradually and slightly shorten the vibrating length of
their folds... tricky stuff. It's hard for men AND women.

I have pretty much given up singing tenor, because it interfered too
much with the countertenor. The coordination is just too different.
