Dear Lauren,
This is just my opinion, but as an creative person first and a
singing person second, I'm not so disturbed by Houston's short
career. Sure, it could have been a longer career, but would it have
been so brilliant?
Some would argue that healthy singing is good singing (and generally,
I do too), but the world is richer for short careers like those of
Callas, Oberlin, and Houston. She had such a glorious voice, I don't
know if we would have heard it if she hadn't pushed it so far.
There also seem to be those with "cords of steel" who manage to tax
their voices incessantly and still do fine - I'm thinking of Bono and
Domingo now...
