Hello all,
I am a newcomer to this mailing list and got the discussion about chest and head register on the way... I would just like to ask a related question about this subject. For years, I was considered to be a mezzo-alto because I used to sing with my voice completely down (in the throat?), which was terribly tiring. The voice lacked of brilliance and power. Now I am working on my head voice and things are much better (less tiring, more power and brilliance...). My teacher still cannot say if I am mezzo or soprano. However, he says that I have no chest voice. I can go down very low still maintaining a head voice, but it lacks power. Also, every time I try to sing in what I think is a chest register, my voice falls again in the throat (large and unfocused sound). Could somebody please tell me if it is possible that someaone does not have a chest register? Or give me some explanation about this problem?
And, could someone explain me what "fach" exactly means? I could not find the word in my "American heritage" and as you certainly noticed, I am not a native English speaker.
Thank you all
Marcia
