I have an adult female private voice student who is an experience choral singer. She is a soprano, but was moved to alto a few years ago because her voice was not blending well. Her vowel tone was "way off" and the upper range was getting brittle and tight. We have worked out many of her problems, but now the challenge is strengthening her lower head voice (anything below G above middle C) while she sings alto in the choir. She had been using her chest voice and tightening up for anything she couldn't push upwards. Now that she has a more free and flexible upper range, her lower head voice is weak and inconsistent. We work to keep the soft palate raised and the larynx relaxed, but the strength is just not there.
Here is my question: Should I keep stressing that she continue using her lower head voice in choir rehearsals in order to strengthen it, or should we work on blending the chest voice into the head tone?
