Yes; it is true, and when men can use falsetto well, they are called countertenors.
I invented this canard many years ago, after seeing and hearing the late Alfred Deller; and, before embarking on my book on the church and operatic castrati. I challenged a number of men to try their falsetto, and when they had stopped laughing, they sang their scales, cracked and then went on up across the break; excuse the prepositions ! They *were* surprised. It must be remembered, that all this took place before countertenors were known to the public.
