judy,
unless i know how someone is going to interpret or, misinterpret something i say, how can i dissuade them in advance? frankly, i thought it was painfully obvious what i meant and didn't see any need for further explaination. i certainly didn't anticipate the comment generating so much discussion. additionally, emoticons, to me, are like censorship viruses. you make the comment and the emoticon delutes it.
for those of you who are ready to shoot us for going on like this, apply the principle of emoticons to any form of self expression and any subtlety is toast. symbols become signs. the distinction between a sign and a symbol is that the symbol presents the possibility of being gloriously misinterpreted. have you ever seen a performance where a gesture sent you off on a tangent of musings? was that gesture planned? did the performer even know she did it (i'm thinking of one i once saw stratas make)? does it really mean 'that' or, did i just imagine it?
