I would almost stake my life on Bach's never having
written an Ave Maria. His first prelude in C from the
Well Tempered Clavier, which also appears in the Anna
Magdalena Notebook, was pilfered by Gounod and another
melody superimposed with the Ave Maria text. I don't
know if Gounod transposed it from C when he did that.
I've had to sing it for a funeral, but I don't
remember what key it was in.

Doris, the New Jersey soprano
