Ian,
I'm afraid that you are the one speaking nonsense--with a dose of self importance and snobbery to boot!
For your information, true professionalism is a standard of quality, not of remuneration. And in this world, the best are not always the best paid. Far from it!
Amateurs can--and often do-- achieve the same level of vocal excellence as paid, full time singers.
It is not unusual for many very fine singers (especially in a very crowded category such as lyric soprano) to have a very hard time finding enough paying jobs to earn a decent living as a full time singer.
Sadly, it is also not unusual for mediocre and even very bad singers to be well paid.
An amateur, by the way, is someone who sings for the love of singing. And I'd rather hear a committed performance by an amateur than a "phoned in" performance by a "professional" who's only in it for the money any day.
