SWEENEY TODD is actually one of the few shows for which I would make an exception to my "no more chorus" rule. I recently subbed as a ringer for an opera chorus concert with a local chorus. The first half of the concert was music from WILLIAM TELL. In English. The second half was CARMEN in French. I told someone, "You know, music like the Bizet is the reason I sang opera chorus for so long. However, the William Tell choruses are why I no longer sing opera chorus." For every incredible chorus experience like CARMEN, whether in concert version or staged, there are at least three un-incredible opera choruses or downright stupid ones like the GUILLAUME TELL (and execrable English translation aside, the music was slop). If I'm going to do the latter, I'd better get paid. Well.
I have made a decision not to do choral work because it detracts from the two things I like to do most - perform as a soloist and teach. If I'm not going to get paid, it had better be for a role that is marketable.
Have you considered pursuing management?
Chris
