something you can try along similar lines is singing into a towel (i'm
sure we could have a discussion - cloth vs. paper). i will often use this
on my students and it is amazing how much better most of them sing when they
can't hear 'how awful it sounds'.

the problems i have with listening too attentively to yourself as you
are singing is that it puts attention on that which has already been done.
i consider singing an action that results in sound. in committing an
action, your attention is on the very next step which, preceeds the resulting
sound. to me, paying primary attention to the sound is like looking out the
back window while driving.
