Hi Molly: Here's some food for thought: I think that sometimes when young adults are studying and working on their voice they can overdo it. They work hard at school all year, then do a lot of summer program work and then it's back to school (All this and jobs too) Perhaps this "non-musical" period as you called it could be your way to relax the voice a bit and relax yourself. You can still work on technique with a 50 hr/week job and immerse yourself in musical past times like listening to good music, reading and attending concerts (if you can afford it). You can also sing with your mind...learning scores without making a sound. If you are building a good, solid technique, you won't lose everything by not attending a summer program. And yes, it would be wonderful to go to Italy and get the exposure to the instructors etc., but you could look around in your local area for a workshop or master class with someone you have not had the pleasure of singing for. Don't let yourself get down about it all...find a way to keep yourself musically excited and motivated.
