This is not rocket science. You are making things a lot more complex than they need to be. When your 4 year old asks why two men are kissing, you give the same answer you would if they 4 year old asked why a man and a woman are kissing: e.g., "Because they love each other."
It seems to me your problem is not how to explain things to your kids. It's your inability (mercifully) to explain your own sense of taboo to children who are innocent of the ability to understand your intolerance and judgementalness. No wonder Jesus likened the truly faithful to innocent children.
