when frank sinatra was young, he had a 'touch of the poet' to him (see 'it happened in brooklyn'). his voice was smooth and lyric. when he was old, he was a 'tough guy' (see reruns of 'saturday night live' for the late phil hartman's frequent impersonations). somewhere in between (the 50's) was the perfect balance. i suggest it was his attempt to be a 'tough guy' (which he probably wasn't) that got him drinking too much and smoking too much and singing too 'tough'.
