I also wonder...one seems to see lots of photos of the Rat Pack with
cigarettes dangling from lips. Did Frank smoke? We know he drank a bit.
Surely these would be factors in the alleged ruin. (It's so hard to
accept!)

Yes, Frank smoked & drank - sometimes PBS will rerun his variety shows
& in them - you'll see the wisp of cigarrette smoke & the 'rocks' glass
with a finger or two of some liquid substance. Yet, his are some of the
most awesome performances on prime time (as were Judy Garland's shows).
I've seen on recent reruns of The Dean Martin Show (w/ the Gold Diggers) -
Dean-0 (as he lounges on a couch) taking a drag off a cig & continue the
phrase of a romance or ballad. Obviously, it's easy crooning he was doing,
& I'm not diminishing what he & others offered, but there was damage being
done nevertheless. I wonder which operatic singers - given the opportunity
-
would perform in a manner similar to Dean or Frank - cigarette in hand?
My guess: James Morris or Dimitri Hvorostovsky.
