Karen, I apologize, in that I had no intention to refer to you personally in what I wrote - I was reflecting my impression of many people I know how seem to have an aversion to intensity in performers. (To cite examples of non-intense performers whose popularity I can only understand by positing that some people prefer easy blandness to intensity, would violate my personal policy of never bashing a performer in public.) On the contrary, knowing you personally, I know you love intensity, so again, I apologize for the impression I left. I'm glad you corrected it.
I also like Neil Shicoff, and love his intensity (and I am aware of many who are put off by his type of intensity, as well), but Cura has a very different persona - a much more extraverted intensity, I think, as compared to Shicoff's very inward-looking intensity. And Vickers, equally intense, has what I'd term a scary sort of intensity. So I love Shicoff as an anguished Hoffmann, but I'd have a hard time imagining strong-guy Cura in that role, as a strong-guy Hoffmann would never fall for a mechanical doll or a lying courtesan.
