I know exactly what you're saying as far as the overall sensation of the more supported sound. It requires the exertion of pressure on the diaphragm rather than on the abdominal muscles below it, which I believe results in the relaxation and better function of the breath support system. Since I've begun using that technique, my voice has increased in its ringing quality and its general volume. Keep that up; it really does work!
