Dear Fiona and list,
I don't have any experience in writing a singer's press release, but I do have some years(continental)experience as an editor, so here a few 'centen'. You should try to think as an editor. Editors are busy, that is to say, they get a lot of press releases and other stuff so they spend a lot of time throwing them away. So you have to do something, to not be treated as garbage. Always send a picture in: most editors are not looking for a singer they want to give a break, they look for things they can make a nice page with! If you have a beautiful picture (which does not mean you have to be beautiful yourself), chances will become much bigger your concert announcement will be published. Furthermore: the editor nmight not want to advise his readers to go to a concert of a bad singer, so if you can give any sings that you are good, your changes will be better as well. Competitons you won, masterclasses, famous teachers, anything that is true and that suggests that you are good will help. One of those things can very well be in the beginning of your
press release. Remember that the editor should become interested in a few seconds, because that is probably all the time he will spend on your press release.
Succes,
Dre de Man
