Dear Vocalisters, at the risk of overkill, I'm forwarding a
message I just got from the Washington Opera, with some good
contact information for letter-writing or e-mails, in the
subject of no opera broadcasts in Washington. Peggy

Title: Metropolitan Opera broadcasts on WGMS
Dear Fellow Opera Lover:

As you may have heard, WGMS Radio (103.5 FM) has decided to
discontinue airing the Texaco Metropolitan Opera broadcasts.
We at The Washington Opera are enormously disappointed by
WGMS’ decision. Since the announcement, we have been
inundated with phone calls, e-mails, and letters from opera
lovers from all over the metropolitan area asking what can
be done to keep the broadcasts on the air in the Washington
D.C. metropolitan area.

You may wish to express your thoughts by emailing the WGMS
program director, Jim Allison, at jallison@w... or by
writing him at:

WGMS Radio
3400 Idaho Avenue, N.W.
Washington, D.C. 20016

The Met broadcasts are an important part of the growth of
opera audiences here and around the country and their
60-year history of introducing people to the art form is an
extraordinary cultural achievement. WGMS has performed an
invaluable service in sharing opera with the Greater
Washington community.

A large response from opera lovers may convince WGMS not to
pull the plug on this historic broadcast series. We hope to
continue to be able to turn on 103.5 FM on Saturday
afternoons next season and again listen to opera, the great
music that the station has represented for so many years.

If WGMS will not reconsider, another possible carrier of the
Met broadcast would be WETA Radio (90.9 FM), the outstanding
local NPR classical music and news station. You may wish to
let your thoughts be known to WETA Radio by emailing Dan
DeVany, their new vice president and general manager at
ddevany@w... or writing him at:
ddevany@w... or writing him at:

WETA-FM
2775 S. Quincy Street
Arlington, VA 22206

The Met's Saturday afternoon broadcasts have introduced
opera to so many of us and brought wonderful music to
millions of families around the world. It would be a very
sad day should this historic series no longer be able to be
heard in our nation's capital.

Yours truly,

Walter R. Arnheim
Executive Director
The Washington Opera
