Subject:  Suggestions wanted for a Newbie

Hello vocalisters,

I've been lurking for awhile and have learned soooo much from everyone's
posts, so I thought I should ask your advice about where to get started. I
have been singing for most of my life in church (choir, solos), school choir
(elementary and junior high), and I took about a years worth of voice
lessons in high school with a private teacher. I am most likely a soprano
of some sort (no one has told me any specific type, that's just the part I
usually sing in a choir). When I was younger, I was cautioned many times
not to start vocal lessons until college or after because the voice was not
mature enough until then to be properly trained (I don't really know the
true wisdom of that, but it made sense at the time). Anyway, I'm 21 now and
I am interested in getting some feedback as to whether or not I have any
"potential" and to see if I would like vocal training. But I'm not sure
where to start. Does anyone know of any good voice teachers in the
Norman/Oklahoma City, OK area? What types of things should I look for in a
teacher? Are there things I should do before starting lessons? Have I
started too late to be trainable? I love listening to opera, musical
theatre, and some contemporary christian music, but I fear my tastes tend
toward the plebian side. What I really would like is to be able to do
community or semi-professional performance (opera or musical theatre) and be
more comfortable when I perform church solos. Well, enough rambling...

Thanks for your help in advance,
Martha Merrill
