if you are cantoring in a church that does not pay you for doing the job of a
professional, which of course i assume you are, i would say get the heck out
of there and find one that does. there are so many catholic churches. as
long as professional musicians put up with that, it will continue. i would
like to see the day when the priests can't find anyone to cantor (or play the
organ for that matter). then they will pay pretty good. another trick they
pull is to find someone who will play the organ and cantor all at once, so
they can get two for the price of one.

i didn't say cantoring in catholic churches was WELL paid, but i said it was
REGULAR pay, which is probably more than can be said of most singing gigs
(unless one teaches).
