Is this because they are a more accurate representation of what the voice really sounds like, or because the sound quality is better due to the echoing of the hall?
I know that some auditions require the person operating the recording device (whatever it is -- DAT, prof. walkman, etc) to sign a form saying that the recording has not been altered in any way.
