If it hurts, you are probably putting too much salt in the mixture or
using iodized salt. The iodine can cause the stinging. It's worth
knowing that in the old days before the widespread use of antibiotics
for sinus infections, nasal lavage was the main course of treatment
used by ENTs. Saline solution was used and they had a vacuum device
that sucked out all the gunk. I went through this a lot when I was a
kid (late 1950s).
